PRE CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS – CIT CAmpus WORKshops
Tour 1: Technology showcase for Metal Fabrication Trades
Date: Wednesday, 12 October 2011 Time: 1400 – 1630 hours Itinerary: 1400 Meet at the Novotel Canberra to leave by bus to CIT Fyshwick Campus (bus will be organised) 1430 Workshop to take place 1600 Leave Fyshwick Campus
Facilitator name(s), centre(s) and campus:
- Steve McMahon, Fyshwick Trade Skills, CIT Fyshwick Campus
Who would be interested/ who should attend and why:
eLearn is a visually engaging resource and both managers and educational practitioners will be inspired by the technology on show. Technological advances including use of an interactive whiteboard in the workshop have fundamentally changed how the training is delivered in the metal fabrication trades area resulting in increased learner and employer engagement. Education managers will appreciate the demonstration of how the teaching goals can be accelerated. The technology can create passionate educational practitioners. From an audit perspective, the increase in online teaching improves documentation, compliance and maintenance of records and as the new technology isn’t paper-based, it is more sustainable.
Brief description of activity (what’s it about, what will they see, what will they find out about)
This is a very visual and engaging workshop that showcases e-Learn resources for the metal fabrication trade. These include assessments, videos, instructions for prac activities, photos of student work, and a demonstration of an electronic roll-book system where all the records required are kept electronically. The implementation of this technology has lead to a reduction to the length of time some students spend at the RTO, allowing for more on-the-job experience. This technology also allows for an increased connection between what the learner is doing in the workplace and at the RTO.

Who would be interested/ who should attend and why:
The new sustainable hub buildings at CIT’s Bruce campus are an example of how to effectively incorporate sustainability into building practices. Anyone interested in seeing how sustainable methods are used in the building and construction industries are encouraged to attend this session. The buildings themselves are the teaching resources boasting solar panels, recycled bricks and other building products, innovative building design causing less stress on the surrounding environment, water efficient measures, double glazed windows, and maximising cross flow ventilation.
Brief description of activity (what’s it about, what will they see, what will they find out about)
A tour of the sustainable hub buildings will allow those interested to see how the use of sustainable practices can demonstrate to students, through its existence, how easy it is to apply best practice techniques. Both the ‘sustainable house’ and the ‘sustainable building’ will be on show. Demonstrations and discussions will cover practical aspects of the house and building and explain how a building can be used as a teaching resource used in teaching practice.
